Publication of the papers selected by the Editorial committee:
December 2017 Intermédialités/Intermediality is a biannual, internationally renowned peer-reviewed journal. It publishes articles in both French and English. Abstracts of proposals (up to 300 words) in English or French should be sent by March 1, 2017 to Caroline Bem at caroline.bem@umontreal.ca. The Editorial board will announce its selection of abstracts on March 14, 2017 and papers should be completed by June 14, 2017.

Final submissions will go through a double-blind peer review and the editorial board will reach a final decision during the summer of 2017. Selected papers will be published at the end of 2017. Submissions should be no longer than 6,000 words (40,000 characters, including spaces) and should be sent as email attachments to the issue editors. Authors are encouraged to use audio, visual, still, or animated illustrations when appropriate.

CLE2016: CLE Working Paper No.1 & Book of Abstracts

In May 2016 CLE and the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences organised a workshop  “Cultural Literacy of Migration: Affects, Memory, Concepts”, the aim of which was to map research areas and research directions which would constitute a core of 2017 conference thematic strands. Abstracts are available on the workshop page as well as CLE Working Paper No.1:  A Compte-rendu of the Workshop of the Cultural Literacy in Europe Forum, organized by Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences by Madeleine Campbell.

We are pleased to announce that CLE second biennial conference will take place in Warsaw, 10-12 May 2017. This conference is organized by Cultural Literacy in Europe Forum, Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Committee on Literary Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Intersemiotic Translation: London, 1 July 2016

Intersemiotic Translation: Words, Brush-strokes and Dancing Shoes–a symposium on translatability across invisible borders

King’s College London, 1st July 2016, 11am – 5pm, Strand Building, Room S3.05

Communication happens on many levels, the gestural, the olfactory, the visual, the linguistic etc. As Walter Benjamin wrote, “communication in words [is] only a particular case of human language” (1916). While word-based languages are confined to linguistic borders, which often coincide with national or even regional borders, non-word-based forms of communication can transcend such borders, while, of course still being influenced by cultural traditions. Intersemiotic translation (e.g. the translation of a poem into dance, or a short story into an olfactory experience, or a film into a painting) opens up a myriad of possibilities to carry form and sense from one culture into another beyond the limitations of words. At the same time, such processes impact on the source artefact enriching it with new layers of understanding.

This symposium seeks to bring together academics, translators, curators and artists, who have explored intersemiotic translation in their practice. It is an opportunity to present individual projects and research, exchange experiences and explore potential new partnerships and collaborations.

Part of the workshop will be dedicated to the Special Interest Group “Intersemiotic Translation and Cultural Literacy”, which has been set up by Madeleine Campbell with initial support from the Cultural Literacy in Europe Forum. We would like to discuss what the group could do for you/us/intersemiotic translation, e.g. provide a framework for joint funding applications, international networks, or future collaborations between individuals/institutions, etc.

Call for Papers: “Replacement”, London, 9-10 December 2016

CfP-ReplacementThis interdisciplinary conference hosted by Birkbeck (University of London) is of interest to all in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It is about modes of personal haunting, looking both forward and back, and may focus on any of the three main positions in the drama of replacement: the ‘replacement’ child or partner; the never-entirely-dead predecessor; or the effect on the empowered or disempowered person whose desires move between these two others.

Keynote speakers: Juliet Mitchell (psychoanalysis), Laura Mulvey (film studies), Naomi Segal (comparative literature) and Naomi Tadmor (history).

Please send proposals for a 20-minute paper (or for a panel of three 20-minute papers) to the two organisers, Jean Owen (ojean27@yahoo.com) and Naomi Segal (n.segal@bbk.ac.uk). Deadline: 30 May 2016. A proposal should comprise your name, email address & academic affiliation if any; the title, a 300-word abstract and a 100-word mini-bio.

Other Europes: Migrations, Translations, Transformations

The symposium encompasses nearly seventy panels covering a wide range of disciplines and includes panels in English, French, and German. Among those presenting are the MLA president, Kwame Anthony Appiah; the philosopher Susan Neiman; the artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien; and the writers Eva Hoffman and Yoko Tawada. With hundreds of participants joining us from across North and South America, Europe, and Asia, the symposium promises to be a stimulating and truly international event.
